Blood clots after surgery

SHORT ANSWER

Blood clots in the leg (deep vein thrombosis) can travel to the lungs, which is a medical emergency. The risk rises after surgery and long journeys, so walking early, staying hydrated and following your surgeon’s clot-prevention advice are important.

Why is the risk higher after surgery?

Anaesthesia, reduced movement, longer operations and flights can slow blood flow in the legs. Smoking, hormonal medicines, higher body weight and a personal or family history of clots can add to the risk.

How are clots prevented?

Measures include walking soon after surgery, compression stockings or calf devices, drinking enough fluid and, for some people, blood-thinning medicine as decided by the surgical team. Your clot risk should be reviewed before surgery.

What are the warning signs?

One leg that is swollen, painful, warm or red can indicate a clot. Sudden breathlessness, chest pain or coughing blood can indicate a clot in the lung and need emergency care.

What about flying?

Surgeons often advise waiting a period before a long flight and moving regularly during travel. The timing depends on the operation and on individual risk.

Blood clots after surgery in Turkey and Istanbul

Clot prevention is a key reason surgeons give guidance about how long to stay in Istanbul before a flight home. Tell the team about previous clots, medicines and family history.

Questions worth asking about blood clots before surgery in Istanbul or elsewhere in Turkey:

  • How is my clot risk assessed?
  • Will I need stockings or blood thinners, and for how long?
  • When is it safe to take the flight home?
  • What should I do about symptoms once I am back home?

When to consult a doctor

Chest pain, sudden breathlessness or coughing blood are emergencies: call 112 in Turkey or 999 in the UK. Seek urgent advice for pain, swelling or redness in one leg.
