Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)

SHORT ANSWER

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, removes or repositions excess skin, fat and sometimes muscle from the upper or lower eyelids. It can improve a tired or heavy appearance and, when drooping skin affects vision, it may also have a functional purpose. Scars are placed in natural creases where possible.

How is eyelid surgery done?

The surgeon makes incisions in the natural crease of the upper lid or just under the lower lashes, removes or repositions tissue and closes the incisions with fine stitches. It can be performed under local anaesthetic with sedation or under general anaesthetic.

Is it cosmetic or functional?

Both are possible. When upper lid skin hangs low enough to restrict vision, treatment can be functional. Other cases are cosmetic. A surgeon assesses the eyelids and general eye health first.

What is recovery like?

Bruising, swelling and tightness are common for one to two weeks. Eyes may feel dry or sensitive, and people are advised to avoid contact lenses and strenuous activity for a period.

Riskler nelerdir?

Risks include dry or irritated eyes, asymmetry, scarring, infection and, rarely, difficulty closing the eyes fully or changes in eyelid position that need further treatment.

Eyelid surgery in Turkey and Istanbul

Some people travel to Turkey, including Istanbul, for eyelid surgery. It is a smaller operation than many others, but early follow-up of the eyes and stitches is still important.

Questions worth asking before having eyelid surgery in Istanbul or elsewhere in Turkey:

  • Will the operation treat the upper lids, the lower lids or both?
  • How will dry eyes be managed during recovery?
  • When will stitches be removed, and how long should I stay in Istanbul?
  • Who can I contact if my eyes become painful after I return home?

When to consult a doctor

Seek urgent medical help if you notice sudden vision changes, severe eye pain, or swelling that rapidly increases on one side.
