How long should I stay in Istanbul after surgery?

SHORT ANSWER

How long to stay in Istanbul after surgery depends on the procedure and the surgeon. Many surgeons ask patients to stay for several days to around a week or more, so dressings, drains and early recovery can be checked. Your surgeon sets the timeline, and it should be agreed before you travel.

Why is a stay needed?

The first days after surgery are when most early checks happen: wound and dressing review, drain removal where used, and watching for bleeding or infection. Being near your surgical team during this period allows problems to be found early.

What affects the length of stay?

Larger or combined operations, such as a tummy tuck with liposuction or a mommy makeover, generally need a longer stay than smaller procedures. Your health, how you are healing and the surgeon’s protocol also matter.

What should be planned in advance?

Ask for the expected number of nights, the date of the first check-up, when stitches or drains come out, and when flying is considered safe. Plan accommodation near the clinic and arrange help at home for when you return.

Staying in Istanbul after surgery

Istanbul is a large city, so it is worth asking how far your accommodation is from the clinic and how transfers will be arranged for check-ups. Rest and limited walking are usually advised in the early days.

Questions worth asking before travelling to Istanbul for surgery:

  • How many nights should I plan for my procedure?
  • When is my first check-up, and when are stitches or drains removed?
  • When will you confirm it is safe for me to fly?
  • What help is available if I have a problem while still in Istanbul?

When to consult a doctor

Contact your surgical team straight away if you develop fever, spreading redness, increasing pain, bleeding or leaking from a wound while you are in Istanbul or after you travel home.
