Is it safe to fly home after surgery?
SHORT ANSWER
Flying soon after surgery raises the risk of blood clots, so surgeons usually ask people to wait until early recovery has been checked. How long depends on the procedure, your health and the length of the flight. Your surgeon should confirm when flying is safe before you book your return.
Why is flying after surgery a concern?
Surgery, reduced movement and long flights each increase the chance of a blood clot in the leg (deep vein thrombosis), which can travel to the lungs. Cabin pressure and dry air can also add to swelling and discomfort.
How is the risk reduced?
Surgeons commonly advise waiting until a post-operative check, walking regularly, staying hydrated, moving the legs during the flight and wearing compression stockings if recommended. Some people are prescribed blood-thinning medicine, but only a doctor should decide that.
What should be agreed before booking?
Ask when you will be cleared to fly, what to carry in your hand luggage (including your medical notes) and whether you need a letter for the airline. Choose a flexible return ticket in case your surgeon asks you to stay longer.
