Swelling and bruising after surgery
SHORT ANSWER
Some swelling and bruising are normal after cosmetic surgery. They are usually most noticeable in the first days and then fade gradually over weeks, although fine swelling can last months after some procedures. Your surgeon’s aftercare instructions explain what is expected and which changes need prompt medical attention.
Why does it happen?
Surgery irritates tissue and small blood vessels, so fluid collects in the area and blood leaks under the skin. Bruises change colour as the body clears them. The amount differs between people and between procedures.
How long does it last?
Bruising often fades within two to three weeks. Swelling usually peaks in the first few days, and the final shape can take several months to appear, for example after rhinoplasty, liposuction or a tummy tuck.
What may help?
Surgeons commonly advise resting with the treated area supported or elevated, wearing a compression garment where prescribed and avoiding smoking and strenuous activity. Do not stop or start any medicine unless your surgeon tells you to.
Swelling and recovery after surgery in Turkey and Istanbul
If you have surgery abroad, for example in Istanbul, swelling and bruising may still be changing when you travel home. Ask what is normal at the time of your flight and what you should look out for.
Questions worth asking if you have surgery in Istanbul or elsewhere in Turkey:
- What level of swelling is normal when I fly home?
- Which signs mean I should contact you straight away?
- How can I reach the surgical team after I return home?
- When should I have my first check-up?
When to consult a doctor
Seek medical advice promptly if swelling becomes sudden and one-sided, is hot, red and increasingly painful, or comes with fever, calf pain or breathlessness.
